En 1927, dans le Michigan, RJ Gordon, un industriel, a mis au point un nouveau prototype automobile, la Gordon-Packhard. Il s'engage dans la Transsaharienne, la plus dangereuse de toutes les courses. Mais il se tue lors des essais et c'est sa fille, la belle Dale, qui reprend le flambeau. Elle vogue vers le Maroc, accompagnée de deux mécaniciens. Le règlement interdisant strictement toute participation féminine, elle se déguise en garçon pour pouvoir prendre part à la course. Dale se retrouve bientôt en tête du peloton, devant un dangereux trafiquant d'armes, von Glessing. Le pire est à venir. Le désert renferme en effet bien des dangers, à commencer par ses habitants, les Berbères...
